Situated at a height of 1308 mts. amidst beautful mountain ranges, terrce farms and small lakes , the picturesque township of Gopshwar is the district headquarter of Chamoli.

An ancient temple of Lord Shiva is the main attraction of the town and thousands of pilgrimes come here throughout the year to visit the temple .

Owing to its natural bauty and fresh and serene atmosphere, Gopeshwar is becoming a major attraction afor the tourists, . Many well known touris spots and religious centres are spread aroud this town.

According to historians, the naem Gopeshwar has associations with the name of Lord Krishna. Besides the ancient temple of Lord shiva, Vaitarni Kund, a group of temples wityhout idols and oak View are other aplaces of inerest.

EXCURSIONS:
ANSUYA DEVI & ATRI MUNI ASHRAM:
Situated at an altitude of 2000 MTS. One has to first reach a place called Mandal (13kms. by bus) and then trek 6 kms. to reach the Ansuya Ashram.

Devi Ansuya is revered as the Goddess who blesses Her devotees who blesses Her devotees with childern. A large fair is held in the month of December on the occasion of December on the occasion of duttatreya Jayanti. Thousands of pilgrims come here to worship the goddess throughout the night with lamps ablazein their hands.

The temple is of archaeologyical importantance as well. At a distance of 2kms. from Ansuya Devi Temple is the ashram of Atrimuni, the husband of Ansuya Davi. The ashram is in the form of a cave temple. The cataracts of Amrit Kund and Amrit Ganga provide a wonderful sight for the tourists.

This is said to be the only place in the world where devotees circumambulate around a river as a mark of reverence.
